I Tried Sweetgreen's New Chicken Wraps To Find Out If They're Worth $15

You might like these handhelds even more than your beloved Harvest Bowl.

Sweetgreen is a no-brainer when it comes to lunch. Between the iconic Harvest Bowl and a wide range of salads (I’m a Buffalo Chicken girl myself — extra pickles and hold the carrots, please), there’s no shortage of nutritious options to curb those afternoon hunger pangs. But now, there’s an entirely new category to savor at the chain: chicken wraps.

On the heels of a fast-food chicken wrap renaissance, Sweetgreen recently released its own version of the famously portable handheld in response to a growing interest in high-protein, fast-casual meals. What sets them apart, you ask? All four wraps star roasted chicken, rather than breaded-and-fried tenders, along with much more fresh produce than the usual shredded-cheese-and-lettuce treatment. Better yet, each wrap contains 37 or more grams of protein, so they should keep you full until dinnertime.

As a food writer who’s tasted just about every fast food chicken wrap out there, I wanted to know how these stacked up. To find out which wraps are worth the buy, I went to the nearest Sweetgreen to taste them all. Below, you’ll find my top pick and details on what to order on your next visit.

The Wraps

All four wraps cost less than $15 each (exact pricing may vary by location). They get the bulk of their protein from antibiotic-free roasted chicken. The wraps come on a signature olive oil tortilla. Three of them are permanent menu additions, but the KBBQ Chicken option is only available for a limited time through August 11, so you’ll have to head there beforehand to try all four. Two of the wraps are also more burrito-like in nature, as they come with white rice. Here are all the details:

Classic Chicken Caesar (47 grams protein, $10.95): roasted chicken, Parmesan crisps, shaved Parmesan cheese, garlic breadcrumbs, romaine lettuce, Caesar dressing, and fresh lemon

The Test

I ordered all four wraps for pickup and ate them in store. I photographed them whole and halved to reflect their overall size and cross-sections. Next, I tasted each wrap and took notes on flavor, texture, appearance, and portability. Finally, I considered each wrap’s value for its size and quality, and pondered whether they’d be filling enough for lunch. I determined a rating, then ranked them from worst to best with each average score being rounded to the nearest whole or half out of 10.

The Results

4. KBBQ Chicken Wrap — Flavor-wise, this tied for first place. But because of its messiness, it came in last. That said, don’t let a little dressing keep you from ordering this limited-time (and dairy-free) pick.

If you’re a fan of sweet-and-savory Korean marinades and mouth-puckering, spicy banchan, you won’t want to miss your chance at trying this handheld. The flavors felt authentic and balanced. The floral, sweet-tart notes of the apple kimchi sauce sang in every bite. The tender poultry delicately fell apart as I chewed, a foil for the sturdy, crisp slaw. The onions reminded me of bulgogi I’ve devoured in the past. The nutty, silky sesame dressing was outstanding as well.

The main downfall here was that it felt lacking in chicken versus the riceless bowls, and much of the outside of the tortilla was soaked. Its messiness detracted from the desired portability of a wrap; I’d prefer it as a bowl.

3. Classic Chicken Caesar Wrap — This punchy, cheesy flavor combination never gets old. And if you ask me, it already has a fanbase in both salad and wrap forms.

This wrap was the first one I tasted, since I’ve had many chicken Caesar wraps before. IMO, it’s the most quintessential option in the lineup. That also means that customers have a baseline for what to expect, so it’s potentially easier to criticize. Luckily, I have a lot of good things to say about it. The chicken was moist and plentiful. The dressing had that umami-rich, borderline-fishy taste it’s famous for. I adored the slightly sweet addition of the crispy onions, and the greens were crunchy and refreshing.

Its simple ingredients also allowed me to taste the wrap itself, which was like a remarkably chewy, extra-pliable Chipotle tortilla. The Parm crisps, though, while delicious, overpowered much of the wrap with salt. They also turned mushy after sitting in the dressing.

2. Chicken Jalapeño Ranch Wrap — Spicy, sour, and bulked up with fluffy grains, this burrito-like handheld is a no-brainer for Chipotle lovers. Just have napkins at the ready.

Fun fact about me? I’m a sucker for “Southwestern”-style menu items at pretty much every major chain. Between produce, cheese, pickles, and spicy dressing (who can resist a pale orange dipping sauce?!), it’s an easy home run in my book. So, I was psyched to taste this one. The corn was sweet and juicy, despite its notably charred exterior that imparted a bit of smoke. The pickled onions were not only gorgeous, but acidic and crisp. The rice was also cooked perfectly (fluffy, tender yet toothsome, not sticky or mushy in the slightest), and I say that as a Cuban-American and consequential rice snob.

The downsides were that, like the KBBQ wrap, it felt lacking in meat with so much rice, and the inside was already so wet with dressing (and hot) that the side dip felt like overkill.

1. Cali Chicken Club Wrap — Think of it as a BLT that forgoes some bacon in favor of luscious avocado and tender roasted chicken.

In my eyes, this is the second-most traditional option on the menu after the Caesar. Bacon, lettuce, and tomato are an iconic trio for a reason. The freshness, cool temp, and juiciness of the produce complement the crisp, fatty, salty bacon. Here, the tomatoes were juicy yet firm and didn’t present as much structural harm as I thought they might (however, I didn’t love their bulkiness in the wrap). The bacon was crunchy, and its smokiness flavored the entire handheld. Instead of classic mayo, the garlic aioli provided slightly less tang but substantially more flavor. I loved the filling addition of avocado, which was deeply buttery and soft.

I also loved the stability of the delectably chewy tortilla; as much as I adore sourdough or white toast, they can make for a BLT that falls apart while you eat it. Besides parts of the wrap not having an even distribution of ingredients (there were pockets of intensely garlicky, salty dressing and chicken, and I could've sworn I bit through a sizable wad of cheese, even though it wasn’t listed as an ingredient), I had very few notes.

Final Thoughts

In the grand scheme of chicken wraps, Sweetgreen’s are ~built different~. They’re significantly bigger and more filling than nearly all fast-food chicken wraps, albeit more expensive. The chicken tastes fresh and high-quality, plus it’s leaner than a breaded, fried tender. From the perspective of a food writer, Sweetgreen couldn’t have chosen a better lineup. The Caesar and Club are for purists, but they each have unexpected flourishes that highlight the chain’s unique offerings. The Jalapeño Ranch option is a nutritious alternative to a burrito for when your heart says Qdoba, but your stomach doesn’t want to be bogged down by 2 p.m. The KBBQ is timely, given the cuisine's skyrocketing popularity.

In terms of construction and portability, the Caesar and Cali club wraps are easier to eat on the move than those with rice. I might have preferred the taste of the KBBQ and Jalapeño Ranch wraps, but I think their components would be more enjoyable served in a bowl than in a tortilla. (If you go that route, I’d argue it’s worth asking for a tortilla on the side for tearing and scooping; it really is delicious.) That said, all four wraps were tasty and well worth ordering. Plus, the prices felt fair and accessible given their quality.
